I know that we don't have Drop Pods in our lists, but we may use them in an ally detachment, or see them used against us. The lack of Drop Pods in our codex may lead to some unfamiliar rules when dealing with the pods. I was assisting one of my friends who plays BA with a list he posted. One of my suggestions was to bring his Honor Guard with a drop pod and drop the jump packs. This idea got us into reading the rules to see how this would work.
example unit: 5 Honor Guard w/ 4x Plasmaguns, Drop Pod - 210
Drop Pod
AV: 12F 12S 12R
Dedicated Transport (12 Models, carries Terminators, Walkers, and other non-jump pack infantry)
Open-Topped
Rules:
Drop Pod Assault - Half rounded up of Drop Pods in reserve come in from reserves on own players turn 1. (Player brings 3 Drop Pods, 2 of them come in on turn 1, the other has to roll for reserves.)
Inertial Guidance System:If a Drop Pod lands on Impassible terrain (this includes non-ruin terrain in 6th edition) or other Models it doesn't suffer a deep strike mishap. Instead you move the minium distance to avoid the object your landing on.
Example: Exactly 1in from any model or base to base with impassible terrain.
When the drop pod lands it forces the unit inside to DISEMBARK. This means that you follow the disembark rules under transports in the BRB.
Example
Note: Drop Pod counts as Open-Topped. This means any part of the hull can be used to measure the 6" limit. There is no written rule if open doors count as part of the hull. Players normally agree that open doors don't count for measuring.
Now that the Honor Guard disembarked and took their 6" movement allowed by the disembarkation rule they can continue into the shooting phase. They can run or shoot as normal. Now some of you may say you can only Snap Fire because you came from a transport that went cruising speed. I will provide rules to clarify between snap firing or normal shooting.
Transports, Fire Points pg.78
"Models firing OUT OF A VEHICLE that moved at cruising speed can only fire snap shots..."
The Honor Guard were forced to disembark from the drop pod due to drop pod rules.
Transports, Embarking and Disembarking, Disembarking Restrictions pg.79
"After DISEMBARKING, models can shoot, counting as having moved,...."
The Honor Guard disembarked thus letting them shoot.
Deep Strike, Arriving by Deep Strike pg.36
"In the movement phase...other than to disembark from a deep striking transport vehicle if they are in one..."
"In that turn's shooting phase, these units can fire (or run) as NORMAL, and obviously count as having moved..."
These two rules now apply to the Honor Guard becuase they disembarked from the drop pod.
Put this all together and the Honor Guard can rapid-fire their plasmaguns at normal BS.
Summary
Even though we DE players don't deal with Drop Pods on a daily basis we still need to know about them. The units in the drop pod get a free movement up to 6" from the hull of drop pod. Any part of the drop pod counts as an access point because it's open-topped. Even though the drop pod counts as cruising speed when it lands the unit still disembarks and can shoot at normal BS.
